Brockville Mayor talks new budget process heading into 2026

The first draft of the 2026 budget is expected in early January

The city of Brockville's 2026 budget process has now begun under Ontario's strong mayor rules.

Mayor Matt Wren explained that it's now up to him to propose the new budget, and then there's a 30-day amendment period to go through with council before the budget can be passed.

Wren can veto amendments within 10 days and council can override a veto with two-thirds vote.

Wren is calling for restraint. After years of steep tax hikes, he wants increases to remain at or below 2025 levels. Partner agencies are urged to keep costs reasonable.

He urged councillors to submit suggestions early, by Oct. 15, to streamline the process and encourages residents to email him with suggestions at themayor@brockville.com.

The first draft of the 2026 budget is expected in early January.
