Officials say the focus must shift to supportive housing, which costs about $45 per person per night—roughly one-third the cost of a CCC stay
The Co-Operative Care Centre (CCC), an overnight homeless shelter on the grounds of the Brockville Mental Health Centre, is at risk of closing after the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville voted to end its funding on December 31.
The counties, the shelter’s sole funder through the Homelessness Prevention Program, say the centre’s model is not financially viable. Funds will instead be redirected to operate 1805 County Road 2 and open new HART Hub shelter beds in Brockville and Smiths Falls.
Officials say the focus must shift to supportive housing, which costs about $45 per person per night—roughly one-third the cost of a CCC stay. Savings will also support food security, winter motel stays, and other emergency needs.
The CCC, which has 24 beds and averages 20 occupied nightly, must submit financial statements to receive funding until year’s end. Its board continues to seek new funding options.
