This was the 21st year of the run
The 21st Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Run came through Brockville Friday evening, drawing crowds as runners made their way up King Street before gathering at Court House Square.
The event, known as the “Run to Remember,” began in 2005 when 24 members of the Peel Regional Police Pacers ran 460 kilometres from Toronto to Ottawa to honour officers who died in the line of duty.
Two decades later, the run has grown to include more than 300 participants from 30 agencies across Canada.
We spoke with runners about what inspired them to take part.
This runner explained the importance of the run.
Local dignitaries, including Mayor Matt Wren, MP Michael Barrett, and MPP Steve Clark, joined community members in welcoming participants and honouring fallen officers.
Runners set out from Brockville to Ottawa for the final leg on Saturday morning, beginning their journey around 8 a.m.
The memorial run served as a lead-up to the Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Service, which was held on Sunday, September 28, on Parliament Hill.
