National Drowning Prevention Week is a time to learn about water safety, be aware of the risks, and put safety first before spending time on or near the water
This week marks the 33rd annual National Drowning Prevention Week, and local officials are reminding everyone to stay safe on the water.
Matt Tyo, Chief of Fire Prevention at the Brockville Fire Department, says preparation is key before heading out.
He recommends checking the weather forecast, packing the proper safety gear, and completing any required boating or watercraft courses before setting off.
Tyo also stresses that having a properly fitted lifejacket in good condition is a must, not just an option.
For those who are not confident swimmers, he says taking swimming lessons or visiting trusted water safety websites can make a big difference.
Tyo also recommends the What3words app, which he says can be extremely helpful during an emergency on the water.
Tyo warns that drowning can happen quickly and quietly, which is why being prepared is so important.
