Awareness is key
Deputy Medical Officer of Health for the South East Health Unit, Dr Linna Li, is reminding residents to take steps to protect themselves against West Nile Virus this summer.
Dr. Li says the virus is mainly spread through birds and mosquitoes, but humans can also become infected.
She recommends avoiding mosquito bites altogether as the best method of prevention.
That includes using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and getting rid of standing water around your home—especially on items like pool covers and garbage cans.
The South East Health Unit is also encouraging residents to stay informed and monitor for symptoms of West Nile.
