Survey says 80 percent of staff have faced violence on the job
The union representing education workers at the Upper Canada District School Board says violence and burnout are rising fast, and they want trustees to act now.
CUPE 5678 started a public petition to call out chronic understaffing and unsafe conditions in schools. But the union says workers were reprimanded for speaking out. The board denies that and says no one was punished.
CUPE’s own survey says 80 per cent of staff have faced violence on the job, with over 50 per cent of classroom workers saying it happens daily. Nearly 90 per cent report high stress and more than half have taken time off due to burnout.
UCDSB disagrees with those numbers, saying its own staff survey paints a different picture. Still, both sides admit the concerns are real.
The board says it’s open to working with CUPE to find solutions and support staff.
