The South Grenville Food Bank in Prescott is urging municipalities to declare a food insecurity state of emergency as demand for assistance reaches record levels.
The organization reports a sharp increase in usage over the past two years. In 2023, client numbers rose by nearly 17 per cent, and in 2024 the increase was another 14.5 per cent. Between 2022 and 2024, a total of 3,059 individuals from 1,473 households relied on the food bank. Counting every visit, the organization provided 19,171 services to 9,472 households during the same period.
Brockville council declared a food insecurity emergency in June and called on federal and provincial governments to address rising food costs, housing affordability and income challenges.
The South Grenville Food Bank says many of its clients are renters, with private housing costs putting pressure on household budgets. Rising inflation and reduced donations continue to add strain to the system.
