A group of Butternut Bay residents is asking the Ontario government to reconsider its plan to widen Highway 401 near Brockville.
The project would expand the highway from four to six lanes, with a future goal of eight. But residents say a sharp curve near the St. Lawrence River makes expansion dangerous and harmful.
They worry about safety risks, noise pollution, and damage to the environment. The curve is close to homes and a local creek, which is already affected by salt runoff.
The group is asking the province to move the highway farther north instead of widening the current route. They say this would shorten the road, save money, and protect nearby homes and wildlife.
Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation is studying the expansion but not the proposed realignment. The ministry says a separate study would be needed to consider moving the highway.
Residents continue to push for change.
