Prescott Councillor suffers life-threatening injuries in arena fall

Councillor Ruth Lockett being treated in Ottawa

Prescott Councillor Ruth Lockett is being treated for life-threatening injuries after falling at the Alaine Chartrand Community Centre on Saturday.

According to a Facebook post from her son, Shawn Lockett, she was rushed to Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus, where she underwent emergency surgery.

“Once arriving at Ottawa Civic Hospital, our mom had an immediate life-saving surgery to address the brain bleed,” Shawn Lockett wrote. “It will be day to day as they assess her recovery.”

Prescott Mayor Gauri Shankar said Lockett fell down the concrete stairs in the arena after moving aside to let someone pass.

Due to her condition, Lockett will be absent from council meetings for the foreseeable future. Normally, missing three consecutive months of meetings could result in removal from council, but Prescott council is considering a leave of absence.

“In our meeting on April 7, we’ll put a motion forward to give her a leave of absence for 90 days,” said Shankar. “We’ll do that until we know what we have to do.”

Lockett’s family has asked for privacy as she recovers.
