Parcels and letters will not be processed or delivered, and some post offices will close
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has declared a nationwide strike just hours after Ottawa confirmed that door-to-door mail delivery will end for most households within the next decade.
CUPW posted the notice Thursday evening, saying all of its members at Canada Post are now walking off the job. The union has not yet provided further comment.
Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu responded by saying it is up to the union and Canada Post to find a balance between the future of the postal service and respect for employees. She added that federal mediators remain available to help.
Canada Post spokeswoman Lisa Liu confirmed that no new mail will be accepted during the strike. Parcels and letters will not be processed or delivered, and some post offices will close.
The corporation says welfare cheques will still go out, and existing live-animal shipments will be delivered.
