Ontario SPCA expands relief efforts as wildfires displace families and pets

Pet Valu has contributed to the response with a $10,000 donation

With wildfires continuing to threaten communities in Northern Ontario and Western Canada, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is stepping up efforts to support displaced animals and their families.

Working through the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre, the organization has responded to 11 emergency requests, delivering more than 37,000 pounds of pet food and supplies to evacuation zones. As the situation evolves, the Ontario SPCA is preparing for a broader response and is appealing to the public for donations.

While government funding helps cover food and supplies during evacuations, donations are needed to assist animals in areas at risk but not yet evacuated. Support includes emergency supplies, transportation, temporary sheltering, and long-term care as affected communities begin to rebuild.

Pet Valu has contributed to the response with a $10,000 donation of products such as crates, leashes, bowls, and food, which are being delivered to Thunder Bay to assist frontline relief efforts.

The Ontario SPCA is also coordinating with local animal rescue organizations and First Nations partners to ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable areas. Continued support will be essential in the weeks and months ahead as wildfire recovery efforts unfold.
