Food insecurity in Ontario has surged nearly 100 per cent since the pandemic, with more than one million residents now relying on food banks.
To draw attention to the crisis, food banks are joining with municipalities to declare official Food Insecurity Emergencies. The declarations are meant to pressure all levels of government to take stronger action to fight hunger and reduce poverty.
Communities including Mississauga, Toronto, Kingston, Hawkesbury, Brantford, Smiths Falls, Cochrane, Brockville, Chatham-Kent and Orillia have already passed declarations. The step has funded new municipal programs and helped local organizations provide food support to residents in need.
Food banks say the growing demand for services shows the urgency of the issue. They argue no one in Ontario should have to worry about where their next meal will come from.
