They are popular because they store energy efficiently and have a long lifespan, but they can also pose serious risks if mishandled.
Fire Prevention Week 2025, running October 5 to October 11, focuses on keeping residents safe when using these batteries.
Chief Fire Prevention Officer at the Brockville Fire Department, Matt Tyo explains some of the dangers they can cause.
Tyo warned that not using the manufacturer’s charger can be very risky and may lead to fires or explosions.
He also shared guidance on what to do if a battery appears abnormal.
Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to temperature extremes, overcharging, and physical damage. Mishandling can trigger fires, overheating, or internal faults.
The campaign encourages residents to charge, store, and handle batteries safely.
