Small businesses watch closely as Canada Post labour dispute unfolds
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) says the nationwide Canada Post strike could have devastating effects on small businesses, especially heading into the holiday retail season.
Dan Kelly, President of CFIB, explained what needs to happen in order to keep Canada Post functioning.
Kelly said last year’s strike cost small firms more than $1 billion.
He warned that the disruption could once again harm businesses that depend on Canada Post for shipping, billing and communication with customers.
Kelly explained that many small firms stopped using Canada Post after the previous strike, and he expects more will follow if service remains unreliable.
Kelly said the future of Canada Post will depend on how long the labour dispute continues and whether the government implements long-promised reforms to reduce costs and modernize operations.
CFIB, which represents 100,000 members nationwide, says small businesses still rely heavily on Canada Post.
