Brockville celebrates its local accessibility heroes
Brockville celebrated its local accessibility heroes on Tuesday with awards and a powerful reminder of the challenges many people still face.
The Brockville Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (BMAAC) honoured three recipients: CNIB volunteer Linda Bosch, the Brockville Winter Classic Committee, and Wall Street United Church.
Bosch was recognized for supporting people with vision loss. She helps run a local peer support group and hosts a national online program that teaches kitchen safety for the sight-impaired.
The Winter Classic Committee was praised for adding an accessible viewing area at Rotary Park.
Wall Street United Church was commended for installing a ramp and elevator, and for promoting accessibility for all—including people with invisible disabilities.
Pastor Kimberly Heath warned that church closures across Canada could harm communities.
BMAAC chair Coun. Louise Severson closed the event by reminding the city that more work is needed to become fully accessible.
