Brockville Fire are warning boaters to stay safe on the water. They say boating fire safety is just as important as on land, especially during the busy summer season.
Police are reminding everyone to carry a working fire extinguisher, check for fuel vapours before starting the engine, and always turn off electrical equipment when refuelling.
They also advise against overloading boats and say propane tanks must stay upright in a ventilated area.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are required for boats with sleeping areas, and boaters should test them often.
Police also recommend having an escape plan in case of a fire.
The department says these safety steps could save lives.
Anyone in an emergency on the water should call 911 right away.
The warning comes after several drownings in the region over the first half of the summer. Fire prevention aims at not adding to the list of tragedies.
