Construction could begin in 2029 with operations starting shortly after
Brockville city council has approved a five-megawatt solar energy project at the 1000 Islands Regional Tackaberry Airport. The project, proposed by Alectra Energy Solutions and Kruger Energy, is designed to help meet Ontario’s growing electricity demand, which the Independent Electricity Systems Operator (IESO) predicts will rise by 75 per cent by 2050.
Council passed a Municipal Support Resolution, joining the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley, which approved a similar measure earlier this month. City staff negotiated a lease-option agreement for the 30-acre airport site, which secures the land for the project and could provide the city with increased lease payments if all approvals are obtained.
If the IESO accepts the submission and all permits are granted, construction could begin in 2029 with operations starting shortly after. The project is part of Ontario’s wider push to expand solar and renewable energy capacity to meet future energy needs.
