Brockville city council has approved spending more than $400,000 on a new self-cleaning public washroom for the downtown waterfront, despite concerns about the high price tag.
The modular, prefabricated facility will be installed at Market Street West and Water Street, where the city demolished old buildings in 2022. The new washroom will feature vandal-proof construction, remote monitoring, and automatic cleaning systems.
The project includes a $175,000 budget overrun, which will be funded by debenture. Supporters say the added cost is justified because the modular design can be relocated for future development.
Coun. Jeff Earle, known for opposing high spending, supported the project and suggested naming the washroom after former councillor Jimmy Cunningham, who long advocated for downtown public facilities.
Coun. Phil Deery voted against the plan, citing economic uncertainty and timing ahead of 2026 budget talks. The motion passed with only Deery and Coun. Mike Kalivas opposed.
